Randsburg- the place to be if your into OHV

Now that I am spending my weekends in Randsburg with my new gallery, I am privileged to have an opportunity to observe. The desert valley become a city of RV’s and the recreation of the desert is off-roading. Some use motorcycles, some use 3 wheel ATV’s and some go all the way with 4 wheel luxury vehicles that roam the desert enjoying the sites and the freedom away from the city. As a desert lover, a lover of the natural- undeveloped un-marred desert, I prefer to travel on foot, horseback or an occasional 4 wheel drive to an area where I can do the other two.
Well, Randsburg has become the Mecca for this culture on the weekends. A respite in the dry, unforgiving desert. The White House Saloon and the General Store offer burgers and drinks both alcoholic and original soda fountain style. Or there is also the Joint if you are just wanting a cold one.

The groups that participate in this sport are just as varied as their vehicles. There are young men, families with children of all ages, including infants, even groups of men who during the week are running a corporation or working in sales. This sport attracts people from all lifestyles.

I am fascinated by the armor that is necessary or at least enjoyed by these groups. Helmets and breast plates, boots and leggings creating the the look of warriors going off to battle in mid-century 2001 Space Odyssey. So the desert has much to offer, including fulfilling your latest Mad Max fantasy. Come on out and enjoy!

Very descriptive, both in words and pictures. Can’t say I’m much for the dessert but I do get why people love it.

Hi Susan, Thank you! This desert has a very subtle beauty. If you aren’t paying attention you can miss it. The solitude and the clear views of the Sierras are what really attracts me. If you ever get an urge to check it out please let me be your guide!

What a unique group of people in a unique environment! I find the desert alluring, although the images from this town don’t appeal to what I would want. I imagine the desert for its stark beauty and isolation. I did enjoy the photos, however, and their vivid energy!

Yes, it is rather the opposite of what I love about the desert. I guess there is room for both if the riders respect the desert and others who want to recreate in other ways.

It’s true, that it is an interesting experience. However what is the most odd thing about it is that these are just regular people with regular lives, who come to play and get out of the city.

Never knew this existed, Cheryl! Thanks for the terrific photos and an introduction to this eclectic group of people. Love the armor!

It really is interesting how normal these people are inside of their weekend play toys. It could just as easily be you or I!

The desert has never appealed to me much. I dislike the super high heat and the starkness of it. I love that others love it. I would only go in for the day to take pictures. Can’t imagine living there! What state is this in?

Nice work Cheryl! Is Randsburg in Nevada? Arizona?… I think I could enjoy the desert as long as I didn’t have to stay there very long….

What an amazing culture you have just allowed me to peek into. Mad Max was the first thing I thought of as I was looking at your images, so it gave me an extra smile to see your reference in the blog

I enjoy the desert for its solitude and quiet. Guess that’s not happening here. It’s like the Wild West!

    • http://www.cherylmcdonald-art.com/ Cheryl McDonald

yes, this is true, it was quite foreign to me and I have been here most of my life in one way or another.

I’m adding another comment so I won’t be discounted in case you don’t get this squared away before Ann checks the comments. The desert has never called me. I am very uncomfortable in the desert. P.S. All comments but one seems to have disappeared. Not sure why.

I find the desert intriguing and spiritual. I don’t think this town scene would appeal to me, but the mix of people is certainly interesting. Your pictures make the place vivid. I would love to see more of the desert itself.

Randsburg is kind of an oasis in the desert. If you don’t bring your own food and water, you will not survive. Randsburg offers a break for those who are camping in the desert to get a beer and a burger. Good things when you are on vacation.
